So have the money for one at the moment… will probably end up with all 3 as i have several rifles to put lights on…
Which to get first tho…
Also re cat v5… reviews say there is a 3x 18650 tube. . Cant seem to find it… and would it fry the driver if it exists ?

Fenix TK61?

it depends really on your price range you are willing to spend on a light when it comes to throwers.

TM36 or TN32

Had not read, It is to be mounted on a rifle? :open_mouth:

You should look for a tactical flashlight! The ones you mention do not see viable to mount on a rifle …

Maybe an aspheric would be a better option

Frag - for a rifle mounted light go the M24S. We (a group of NZ hunters plus some BLF guys) designed it specifically as a high output all-purpose hunter - scope mounted or handheld spotlight. Light weight at just 270gms, 90-95k lux stock, and dedomed about 190kcd which is 850+m ANSI. We’ve also designed it with 25mm tube for standard scope rings, and dropped out the strobe/SOS, leaving it with hi/med/lo and mode memory.

Dedomed our rangefinding tests show it will pick out large animal bodies at up to 500 yards in clear conditions on high beam, and we use the med beam (70-80k lux) for closer range spotlighting eg possums in trees etc at 10-50 yards.

Key requirement for rifle light is power plus light weight and the Thrunite Catapult and TN32, while excellent lights, are not ideal hunter/rifle lights at 650gms each. That’s too much extra weight and too heavy for scope mounting.

M24S also half the price. We use them by the hundred in NZ for hunting - usually dedomed - and they are ideal. You won’t need an aspheric as the M24s has a much more usable beam - very long distance plus beam width for scanning large areas of terrain quickly.

With my gear and limited ability Im not shooting all that far. But I’ve got sight lines out over some nice open fields for several km from a nice ridge 0.25 is not going to be sufficient for me hence going for more powerful lights… was intending to side mount not scope mount as I generally shoot from one of several preferred spots with bipod. Can even shoot from the front verandah which has a nice bench with sandbags setup so wasnt really worried about weight or weight distribution.

The m24s is something I will probably get to pair with a nice little .222 for turning rabbit into clouds of fur…no reviews on its durability so dont want to pair it with anything bigger.
Ive seen vids of a v5 being used to hammer in nail so was thinking it would go nice with a .308

So what exactly is your desired range? The only distance you mention is “several km” and it just doesn’t matter how much money you throw at it, nothing that fits on the end of your rifle will do that.

Since you mention the TN32 you’re obviously ok with wide body / large reflector lights. Check out the Courui big head (current sale for $30!) its a 3cell (next to eachother) body with a 75mm reflector. Nothing impressive stock but can easily be built to throw ~350kcd (that’s killing the stock TN32). Also the Fenix TK61 listed is a great light (tho much more expensive than the courui)

Each of these options will throw enough light to acquire your target ~1000m out but there just isn’t much that will do beyond that.

Another option I’ll mention (tho not on par with those two) is the Yezl Y3, currently my personal favorite [pocket size] thrower mine’s putting out 1420Lm and doing 275kcd with only $40 total (host and all parts) in it.

Below that is the good old (fits standard rings) Jacob A60. I just sold one of these with a red PT54 to a local dude I met out hog hinting on a trail I was hiking one night, hog hunting here tho is done with dogs so he uses it handheld but I went with the A60 incase he ever did want to mount it be could have a good choice of mounting options. Host is on sale right now at gearbest for $9.99 (requires code, check the BLF deals thread, sale ends 10/20). The one I built read 128kcd but I highly highly doubt that’s at all accurate, the sensor designed for white light doesn’t pick up the narrow band red very well, it looked by my eye to be more like 200kcd and if you use a smaller die emitter (like a red XP-E2, the ph54 is HUGE) you could probably get 250kcd and way better run times (~2.6A max for the XP-E2 to do that, in mine the PT54 was pulling 8.8A).

Ideally I’d like to be able to spot out to 1.5km with the scope. Will realistically be sub 500m for actual shots.

If you’re stationary and bipoding you could also use the 440 gram Maxtoch 2X as a rifle light. It is 120kcd stock, 240-250 dedomed (1 km), and 350-400kcd with mods. But…as cereal points out there isn’t really any rifle-sized light for 1.5-2kms. Have to be a very powerful HID with big lens. Or some very modded up multi led heavyweight which will likely be running very hot and have limited runtime on high.

Mates use M24s etc on 223s and 243s.

Ok. Mudz… im gonna blame you if this light isnt awesome
About to order a m24s + rats tail (they should make it a kit)
If its not big enough for the .308 I will just use it on a .222 and get something else.
Will get the tn32 in a week or 4.

Any amanda discount codes before i hit the big green button?

Its a good hunter light esp when dedomed but the ANSI measure for the dedomed M24S of round 850m is certainly not - as you’ll know - its practical shooting range. Definitely not for 500-1500m shooting.

Good for 300m shooting plus good safety zone visibility behind target animal. For 300+ I’d look at a modded 350-400kcd torch like the 2X (350+kcd modded) or others mentioned above, but most likely go straight for a powerful HID.

M24S would no doubt mod to round 350kcd.

No codes that I know of.

$98.29
Ordered and paid…
Now to see how long she takes to deliver.
Suggested mods besides dedome ?

We haven’t done any mods beyond dedoming on the M24 - gave good light for the range at which we night shoot i.e. up to max 300 on wallabies/pigs etc.

Tom E could likely help with additional mod ideas as he had the 2X running at round 350kcd.

We only use good quality batts eg panasonic 3100/3400s - to get good runtime.

I see some people from recommending HID’s, can you rifle mount an HID?

Can you… yes… lightforce make a nice 170mm light for rifles…
I’m looking at a 240mm blitz with 100w 12v hid conversation. Hoping to run it off 16.5v cordless drill bats as i have a spare with charger from a dead drill. Runtime and weight will be a pain tho on a rifle. Will probably end up with laptop batteries in a backpack running a cord.

with regular bulbs in a regular mount? Or does it have to be a special shock isolated mount / bulb? I didnt think standard bulbs in standard lights could handle any shocks at all.

Ok i shall try to convert this to american

The one I’m looking at mounting is designed to go on a offroad suv with steel bars on the front of it And will survive the gforce of the vehicle its mounted on hitting something the size of a small buffalo at 70 miles per hour… or bouncing over 20,000 corrugations in less than a week. Plus they have a shock absorbing rifle mount for their 7” light which I was going to see if it would take a 9”
I really don’t want to use it… my rifle is already arround12 pounds with bipod/scope/rails etc.
But my light vs price requirements dont leave a lot of options.
