What wire gauge do you use for fet direct drive / high amp lights?

If your prefer larger than 16, please post what size you use.

Poll to decide what diameter driver vias to choose (which would be large enough to cover most members preferred wire gauge). H)

Thanks

I chose 20 gauge. If on the rare occasion I have extra space available, 16 gauge would be the choice.

18, because that is what I have, my next gauge is 22

I use 20 because RMM stocks some superb 20awg silicone wire. From what I can tell, at the lengths we typically use there isn’t much, if any, advantage to going bigger. If I need to use longer than 4inches or so, I might go for 18.

Yes, I have 20 and 16 lol.

There you go can.

I do Djozz FET version driver with 22.

18(I have it at home) is to big, bulky and stiff. I would not recommend it in small 17mm builds.

The American Wire Gage Table lists wire resistance in ohms per 1000 ft. Move the decimal 4 places to the left to get the resistance of a typical length of driver wire then double it because there are two wires. The difference between 18 and 20 would be less than .4 milliohms. You’d be doing well if you had an FET with only 10x that resistance but since resistance is additive you do what you can wherever you can. That being said, as soon as you turn on the light cell voltage begins to drop anyway.

I’m glad to see people aren’t crazy about using large gauge.

22 ga works fine…I really like the super flexibility of this wire

Just strip a tiny 1/16” portion, flux it, tin it…and solder away, works GREAT on spring bypasses too

If anyone has ever seen the hair thin wire they put in the eGo vaping rigs those things pull an amp or two on lower resistance coils…you would understand 22ga looks like a power cable compared to those things! Its like 40ga or something crazy like that

00 welding cable.

Oh, wait, not subwoofer amps.

I’ve been using 22 for pretty much everything, because it seems like the smallest I can go without sacrificing much performance… and because I don’t use enough to bother keeping other gauges around.

I use bout the biggest I reasonably can without too much fuss'n. 22 AWG is typical, but prefer 20 when I can. I find working with 20 though can be awkward. 18 on rare occasions. Picked up a bunch of sizes recently from BangGood - found a special deal they were having on wire at the time. It came in and seems quite good - 200C rated, good strand count, etc. I've bought Turnigy, IOS's, MtnE's - tried many sources. BG wire here: banggood-1M-8101214161820222426-AWG-Silicone-Wire - can't find the coupon code... It's only 1 meter, so for 3 meters, IOS may be a better deal but only has limited sizes.

i use 18 and 22 gauge silikon wires from intl outdoor
alsways as big as fits…

22g but anything longer than 3cm i use 18g, they’re a bit too thick if space is limited…

Nice table. Thanks :)
